In this video I finally conquer potassium octacyanomolybdate using a prep from a paper from 1974. In this prep potassium molybdate dihydrate K2MoO4 (made from ammonium molybdate and KOH) is reduced with potassium borohydride and glacial acetic acid in the presence of sodium potassium cyanide (made in the usual way). It still threw me some pretty wicked curve balls like the final product being obtained as an oil that had to air dry; didn't see that one coming. But in the end I obtained a nice, bright yellow product exactly as described in the literature! See? Hard work and perseverance really does pay off!!!
