Beethoven completed a set of three piano quartets in 1785 at the age of 15. This type of chamber ensemble was rare for the time, and Beethoven may have been trying to emulate Mozart who had composed two works in a similar format.

This quartet is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro vivace
II. Adagio con espressione
III. Rondo: Allegro
