Mississippi Governor: Abortion is 'Genocide' of Black Children

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant equated abortion to the “genocide of 20 million African-American children” during a November 12 speech, and, in a state with a painful history of lynching, defended a GOP Senator’s reference to public hanging. A video showing Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith was released on November 11, during which she can be heard saying that, if she were invited to a public hanging, she’d be in the front row. Her statement drew outrage given Mississippi’s history. Bryant spoke to the press about the video on November 12, saying Hyde-Smith did not have any ill will and that everyone in public life had said things that could have been said better. “Absolutely, we have been sensitive to race relations in this state,” he said, before asking why there was no outrage over the abortion of African-American children, saying, “no one wants to talk about that.” This footage was streamed live by Mississippi Today.
