Making Poke Root Oil
The medical benefits of poke root are said to include effects on the lymphatic system that can help with swollen glands in the throat, breasts and reproductive organs. In folk medicine, it is also used to treat various types of infections, such as ear infections, laryngitis, and tonsillitis.
Applying the infused oil of the dried root is also thought to help with the pain and swelling of arthritis and rheumatism. Proponents of this herb also claim that it can stimulate the immune system and clear the body of toxins. The root can also be used in the form of poke root cream and poke root oil to treat various types of skin problems, like acne, eczema, boils, ringworm, wounds, and scabies.
Poke root contains antiviral proteins that are the subject of medical research to determine if they can be used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. This research is still highly preliminary and experimental. Some practitioners of alternative medicine claim that the root and other parts of the Phytolacca decandra plant can be used to treat cancer, including breast cancer and skin cancer.

Uses and Benefits:
It can be used externally, as a lotion or ointment to rid the skin of scabies , pests, tinea, acne, skin infections and parasites, breast tumors, caked breasts, abscesses, and fungal infections. and it may be applied in a porridge to soothe ulcers, hemorrhoids and inflamed joints.
Researches reported that its proteins have feature to resist influenza , HSV-1 viruses and poliovirus. It can be used to cure abscesses, boils, and sores, or to relieve difficult urination by placing a porridge over the bladder area.
To reduce swelling of the skin, to make clear & smooth a blend of herbs and oils can use. It is useful to treat sore throats, earaches, herpes, catarrh tonsillitis , laryngitis , swollen glands , mumps, stones and abnormal growths, such as cysts and breast lumps.
It is used as a cathartic in paralysis of the bowels. Headaches of many sources are benefited by it, and both lotion and tincture are used in leucorrhoea.
As a poultice it causes rapid suppuration in felons. The extract is said to have been used in chronic rheumatism and hemorrhoids.
Authorities differ as to its value in cancer. Great relief towards the close of a difficult case of cancer of the uterus was obtained by an external application of 3 OZ. of Poke Root and 1 OZ. of Tincture used in the strength of 1 tablespoonful to 3 pints of tepid water for bathing the part. It is also stated to be of undoubted value as an internal remedy in cancer of the breast.
The following prescription has been recommended: Fluid extracts of Phytolacca (2 OZ.), Gentian 1 OZ.) and Dandelion 1 OZ.), with Simple Syrup to make a pint. One teaspoonful may be taken after each meal.
Infused in spirits, the fruit is used in chronic rheumatism, being regarded as equal to Guaicum.

Modern pharmacological actions of pokeroot
1) It has a significant expectorant effect;
2) Its alkaloids have antitussive effect;
3) Poke root extract has a diuretic effect. And studies have shown that the diuretic effect is dose-related – low dose increases the flow of urine while large dose decreases urine output;
4) Its extract has different degrees of inhibition on Shigella, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and some skin fungi.
