The Closing of the American Mind and Our Listless Universities

Allan Bloom famously wrote a book called The Closing of the American Mind in 1987. However, the baseline for this text was set 5 years earlier in an article that he penned for National Review called "Our Listeless Universities". In both the article and the book, Bloom set out to explain the litany of cultural problems that we have been facing since at least the 1980s. Bloom traces these back, correctly I might add, to the universities. Specifically to the terrible ideas that first emanated from German universities which were later taken up by French universities and passed on the rest of the West.

Bloom's work is often considered to have been the point at which the Culture Wars were first announced and identified. Harold Bloom's The Western Canon, Roger Kimball's Tenured Radicals and The Long March, and Dinesh D'Souza's Illiberal Education flesh out many other aspects of the problems we are facing.
