Purpose:
The purpose of this project was to purchase and configure locally available materials in a way that could provide bullet resistant capabilities up to "Type IIA" Standards.
Materials:
1. Medium Weight Denim (Purchase by the yard at Walmart)
2. Locktite or Liquid Nails Construction Adhesive (Purchase at Lowes)
3. Roof Flashing (Purchased at Lowes)
4. PEI5 Ceramic Floor Tiles (Purchased at Lowes)
The PEI5 Ceramic Floor Tile is the Critical Element that gives the armor its bullet stopping capabilities. When you go to the hardware store, look for the PEI5 rating on the boxes for the tiles. PEI5 Floor Tiles are significantly stronger than bathroom wall tiles or decorative tiles.
Construction:
Spread an even layer of Construction adhesive over each layer of Denim. Add layers of denim on top of previous layers until you reach a minimum of 12 layers. Once you apply a top layer of construction adhesive on the top of the 12 layer plate, compress the plate with weights or clamps to ensure uniformity of thickness. After it has cured for 2 days remove the plate from compression and expose it to the air on a flat surface and allow it to cure for a minimum of 7 days before cutting the plate to the dimensions of the floor tile. Use a diamond coated cutting wheel on a angle grinder to cut the plate to exact dimensions needed.
Adhere the roof flashing to the back of the PEI 5 Ceramic Floor Tile with construction adhesive.
Place the layers from front to back Ceramic tile as the impact surface with the roof flashing towards the back. Place the Denim Plate in the back. Wrap tape around the combination of materials and the plate is complete. Ensure that you annotate the strike face. Test all plates that you create to gain confidence in their bullet resistivity; video it; and post it on Youtube for others to enjoy.
