Thousands of mainly young people, queued for hours and hours for the first Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine open day in Bologna on Wednesday. Police were called to attempt to control the excessive pushing and shoving as locals desperately fought their way to the front of the queue to receive a shot of the vaccine.
Many people told reporters that they slept in front of the entrance the night before, as news of 1,200 free doses of the one-shot vaccine became available.
"We arrived last night, around
PM," explained a local resident inside the centre awaiting his vaccination shot.
"At the start it was just us here. Then these guys arrived, this girl with her boyfriend. Nothing really, we slept, or better said, we tried to sleep in the car in those few hours during which it was possible," stated another local resident.
Approximately 5,000 people queued for what was originally 1,200 vaccine doses. To help meet the demand, which was higher than originally expected, the local health authorities decided to double the amount of available doses to 2,400 for today, meaning almost half those who arrived received a vaccine.
"We decided to come very early because it's a good opportunity for us young people to get this single dose vaccine and not have to wait until the end of summer," remarked a young local resident while queueing.
