Empires rise and empires fall, the mighty Aztec empire which had conquered and absorbed most of what is today southern Mexico looked nigh indestructible until the arrival of another empire in 1519, the Spanish. From the Spanish colony of Cuba, a trading mission was sent under the command of one Hernán Cortés. According to legend, when Cortés landed on Mexican shores, he ordered all of the ships that had carried his men there be burned, as a message to his fellow conquistadors: No step back. He was not there for mere trade. Cortés immediately went against his orders to trade and establish contact with the Aztecs and began building alliances with native tribes and city states that had been subjugated such as the Texcocans and the Talaxcaltecs to overthrow the ruling Mexica-Aztecs, which of course he did, marching to the capital of Tenochtitlan, at the time possibly the biggest city in the world, almost certainly bigger than any city in Europe. With superior weapons brought from Spain and superior numbers provided by the native allies, the Spanish and allied forces laid siege to the city, firing into it with cannon and arquebus, devastating it. When it was captured, all Mexica-Aztec were exiled from the city, and the foundations built upon once again by the Spanish to create the new Mexico city.
