I have experimented with several baby monitors in the past but usually, they are rebadged IP cameras with a reduced feature set and require a phone app or pc to work. It was good to try this well made and easy to use stand-alone rival from Victure, newly updated, which can also serve as a pet monitor, intercom or home security alarm. It is well made, easy to configure and works straight from the box.
The Baby Monitor arrived attractively packaged in a mid-market but well-designed display box making it very suitable as a gift. In the box are the camera, monitor, power supplies for each and a large and easy to read User Guide. Build quality all seems fine and nothing looks likely to fail anytime soon.
The build quality seems good. It looks strong and robust and likely enough to survive the knocks and bangs of everyday use. It is rather more stylishly designed than some rivals I have seen. The camera is mains powered only, and on the front has a status LED, light sensor, lens and a single large Night Vision infrared LED. On the rear are a speaker, a small stalk microphone, temperature sensor and micro-USB power socket. The monitor, which can be mains or battery-powered, has a 2.4-inch colour LCD display with on-screen status icons. There are buttons for Volume Up/Left, Volume Down/Right, Music, and Push to Talk microphone. There are separate buttons for Menu/OK and Power and Return. On the monitor back there is a kickstand and a compartment for the non-removable rechargeable battery On the side is the Micro USB power port. The User Guide is large, well printed and easy to read.
Usually, the first thing to do with any wireless monitoring system is to configure it on your home network but not in this case as the camera and monitor use their own peer to peer 2.4Ghz encrypted network. The camera and monitor paired automatically as soon as I switched them on but there is an option for manual pairing through the monitor settings panel. Through this panel you can also select the operating language, set the time, configuring a timer, (handy for bottle feeds), set the operating mode etc.
The device offers two-way audio, a range of lullabies that can be played, and a VOX feature which will turn the monitor on whenever sounds are detected by the camera. The Monitor screen can display signal strength, current temperature from the camera, VOX feature enabled, date and time.
The 2.4″ colour LCD screen is clear, easy to read and the brightness can be controlled from the settings panel. The menu settings are straightforward and easy to navigate and once configured can be left alone. The audio quality is surprisingly good for the size of the units and clear and undistorted.
It is not all good. There are no audio or video out ports so you can’t use the device with external equipment. There is no motion detection alert so you have to keep watching to monitor the baby although the VOX feature will turn the monitor on when sound is detected.. It is not possible to make recordings and there are no temperature or other alerts. It does have a timer and clock which can be used to set reminders for feeding times.
This is a well made and surprisingly capable monitoring device which works straight from the box and offers options above and beyond the basic functions. It is not the cheapest I have seen for the £50 price, but the build quality and ease of use make the price well worthwhile. If you need a simple and straightforward baby monitor focused just on the task of watching over your baby then this would make a good choice.
