Metal Gear is an action-adventure. It was originally developed by Konami for the MSX. The game was later ported to the NES with significant changes. The NES version was then ported to PC and C64, with the C64 version developed by Unlimited Software and published by Konami under their label Ultra Software.
You play a marine called Solid Snake on a mission to infiltrate a basis in the fictional African state Outer Heaven to free hostages and ultimately locate and destroy Metal Gear, a walking tank that can shoot nuclear missiles.
You start off the game with no weapons and need to to find your way into the base. While you can use your fists and find weapons, you have to avoid enemies most of the of time. The game uses static screens which are flipped between. If you reenter a screen, all enemies have respawned. Unless you did not trigger a major alarm, all enemies will be unaware of your presence again, until they spot you again. Apart from weapons, there are many others things to find, like armour, key cards, binoculars (enable you to look at the next screen while outside) or rations. You also have a transmitter to receive messages or contact your base. Your superior will contact you from time to time to give you crucial information.
