Schubert completed this symphony in 1818 with the premiere performance being given in 1828 in Vienna. The name is derived from the fact that Schubert composed two symphonies in C major, with the 9th symphony being called the “Great C major” due to being longer than the 6th.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Adagio – Allegro
II. Andante
III. Scherzo: Presto
IV. Allegro moderato
