Beethoven completed a pair of cello sonatas in 1796 after a meeting with Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia. Beethoven was introduced to Jean-Louis Duport, younger brother to Jean-Pierre Duport, cellist at the court of Friedrich Wilhelm II and it is thought that Beethoven composed these two sonatas for Jean-Luis to premiere.

This sonata is comprised of two movements:
I. Adagio sostenuto – Allegro
II. Rondo. Allegro vivace
