In this video I make up palladous bromide by reacting precipitated palladium metal with concentrated HBr and HNO3. The palladous bromide is then reacted with ammonium bromide to make dark red diammonium tetrabromopalladite(II). This compound in solution in HBr is then oxidized with elemental bromine to a very dark olive diammonium hexabromopalladate(IV) whose crystals appear almost metallic.
