Stalin was not a communist in any sense that defines communism as an economic and political system that empowers workers - the sense that Marx originally gave it. He did give communism a bad name by murdering millions of Russians and causing the deaths through starvation of millions more, all in the name of communism. Stalin was a militant atheist, who persecuted religious Russians. His quip was probably meant to annoy Churchill. If he had known Churchill better he might have saved his breath.
