Video #43│2017 PREMONITION? Asterix – Obelix Comic Featured Bacillus (Bacteria)& MASKED Coronavirus?
A remarkable premonition from 2017?
Word "Coronavirus" appearances: 28 times
Word "Bacillus" occurrences: 6 times
While a virus outbreak with origins in the Chinese city of Wuhan marches out into the world in the new decade of 2020, a character in a 2017 Asterix comic series was actually called Coronavirus! Asterix, the Gaul from the eponymous French comic faced Coronavirus, a masked Roman villain with a reputation of stopping at nothing to win. In the 37th edition of the 'Asterix and the Chariot Race', released in the year 2017, Asterix battles his way across Italy in a chariot race against the Romans. "Here comes our favourite, straight from Rome! The Champion with MCDLXII victories! The one they call the 'The Masked Auriga', the great Coronavirus, and his faithful Bacillus", it says. The original book 'Asterix et la Transitalique' set in ancient Italy was released over 2 years before Wuhan reported its first case of the new strain of coronavirus in December 2019. The comic features Asterix and his sidekick Obelix (and their dog Dogmatix) participate in a chariot race across Italy organised by Caesar. They have to contend with the villain named Coronavirus and his sidekick Bacillus. Bacillus is the Latin term for bacteria! It is interesting to note that Coronavirus the masked villainous chariot racer eventually failed to win.
Did Asterix predict the coronavirus outbreak?
Commentators wondered if the Asterix authors were psychic, showing the characters defeating 'Coronavirus' years before the word became a household name.
In reality however the word has existed since the 1960s as a scientific term.
There are many kinds of coronavirus, such as the SARS virus that hit headlines in 2002-2003, or the current one known formally as COVID-19.
They are so-called because of the crown-like shape of the viruses when viewed under a microscope.
Not kidding!
While the virus has been linked to many scientific theories and social perceptions, an uncanny link has been established with the legendary French comic book series – Asterix.
Coronavirus gets its name from the word 'corona' which means 'crown' in Latin. While the virus has been linked to many scientific theories and social perceptions, an uncanny link has been established with the legendary French comic book series – Asterix.
