There are 250,000 applications for citizenship, asylum and visas in Ireland per year
There are 250,000 applications for citizenship, asylum and visas in Ireland per year according to the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan.
Flanagan was answering a question in regards to the deportation order for Shepherd Machaya whose parents' application for asylum had been rejected and the whole family was to be deported. However, the media and had promoted a school petition to get the child to stay like the previous case of Eric Zhi Ying Xue which would mean the parents would get to stay too. TD Richard Boyd Barrett had called the deportation order "anything but compassionate".
Eric Zhi Ying Xue's mother had committed passport fraud. Committing this offence may have meant the Eric's mother was not entitled to avail of the "scheme which does not exist" to acquire Irish citizenship.

The Irish Independent revealed the secret scheme gives permission to failed asylum seekers and illegals to stay in Ireland if they've been here for over five years without a criminal record.

It is unknown if Shepherd Machaya's parents similarly had committed a criminal offence.
During Flanagan's response to the question, he revealed that his department deals with 250,000 applications for citizenship, asylum and visas in Ireland per year.
"I do not intend to depart from the time-honoured tradition of not discussing the detail of case files on the floor of Dáil Éireann. However, I remind the Deputy that each and every case is given due and careful consideration over a range of circumstances, including age, length of time, family circumstances and family connections with the State.
"Having regard to applications for citizenship, international protection and visas, agencies within my Department deal with in excess of 250,000 cases on an annual basis. Of those, I wish to assure the House that only a tiny fraction are subject to deportation orders at the end of a lengthy process."
Less that 1% of deportation orders against illegal minors are implemented. Over the previous 5 years, 20,000 had been granted Irish citizenship.
