Schumann completed this work for piano and orchestra in 1849 with the premiere performance being given in February of 1850 in Leipzig. Clara Schumann would be the soloist at the premiere. As the work did not fit the conventional format of a piano concerto, it would be given the title “Konzertstück” or “Concert Piece”.

This work is comprised of two movements:
I. Introduction: Langsam
II. Allegro
