Heresy doesn't just send one person to Hell: it drags many down to Hell as heresy spreads: man is so often apt to turn to heresies, which are the tempting of the devil, corrupting often what were faithful souls & leading them down the path of the serpent into Hell. Traditionally, murder was punished by death: but how much worse is heresy which sends many into eternal death? The crime of heresy brings not only eternal death, but also fire, torture, misery, slavery of demons, despair & total absence of God - forever and ever. This is why the church traditionally considered heresy as a capital crime, & has always described heresy as "the gates of Hell" & those gates into Hell are "the death-dealing tongues of heretics". It is the duty of the state to propagate the true religion & quell heresy accordingly.
Pope Vigilius, Council of Constantinople, 553 AD
“ These matters having been treated with thorough-going exactness, we bear in mind what was promised about the holy church and him who said that the gates of hell will not prevail against it (by these we understand the death-dealing tongues of heretics)..."
Pope St. Leo the Great (c. 450): “For whoever is led away from the path of the true faith, and changed to another, his whole journey is an apostasy; and the further he travels from the Catholic light, the nearer he comes to the darkness of death.”
