CBI wants continued cheap foreign labour post Brexit in Northern Ireland

The CBI (Confederation of British Industry) says immigration rules post Brexit risk causing significant harm to businesses in Northern Ireland. The British government is currently consulting on a minimum salary requirement of £30,000 but the CBI says this is too high as some sectors are heavily dependant on importing cheap foreign labour.

The average private sector salary in Northern Ireland is £22,000 and 71% of all workers earn less than £30,000. If businesses are forced to abide by a minimum salary of that amount, they won't be able to access cheap labour at the price they want.

A managing director for Lidl in the UK has admitted that access to cheap foreign labour in Europe has depressed wages.
