We recently received some windows from really good friends who wanted to see them recycled and we were up for the challenge.
We started by laying one of the windows on a piece of cardboard to make a cutting template. Once we had the template, we marked the inside of the barn wall where we wanted the window and took a few measurements to make a frame.
Next, we cut the perch to provide access to the location of the window. This was done with a skill saw, a scrap piece of 2x4 and a vice so that we could get a nice straight line. We then removed one of the perch supports from where the window frame would go to the other side.
We followed this by drilling a hole at each of the four corners of the marks we made with the template so we could mark and cut the wall from the outside.
Now it was time to cut a hole in the wall. We tacked some left over siding to the wall to be sure our lines were straight. Once in place we simply used the skill saw again to cut out the hole for the window. We simply repeated this procedure for all four sides.
Back in the garage we used the window as a template to build a frame ensuring it would fit perfectly.
Once completed, we installed it with no issues. Putting the window in was not quite as easy because the frame was made to fit perfectly which meant the window had to go in perfectly straight. By inserting the window from the outside and using a scrap piece of wood and some light tapping we got it in.
Lastly, we used the leftover siding to make an exterior frame for the window. We used a miter saw to make 45 degree cuts, tacked them up and now all we have left to do is paint!
