Despotism 1946
“You can roughly locate any community in the world somewhere along a scale running all the way from democracy to despotism”, so begins this short from Encyclopaedia Britannica Films, published a year after the end of the Second World War. The film goes on to illustrate (with some wonderful graphics, archive clips, and reconstructions) the idea that despotism has two chief characteristics — restricted respect and concentrated power.
A community is low on a respect scale if common courtesy is withheld from large groups of people on account of their political attitudes; if people are rude to others because they think their wealth and position gives them that right, or because they don’t like a man’s race or his religion."

Still relevant today?
Today, I watched a Faith Goldy video while she was video posting on the street. A passerby told her to "F-off". And she took it in stride, as conservative speakers like her are a lightning rod of hate from the left, emboldened by the leftist media. The status quo today is intolerant of conservative thought. Anything right of the far-left is considered Nazi. And any dissenting thought is considered hate or thought crimes. And YouTube/Google, Facebook and Twitter brashly censoring and banning conservative users and their opinions.
The point made about a "low respect" society includes being rude to others, because of their "race or religion". I don't think it'd be a stretch to add ideology or political beliefs?
Using the yardstick of "respect", specifically the disrespect shown to conservatives, I'd say the U.S. is deep in despotism.
Is that where we are? A low-respect despotic society?
