SHOCK: FIRST HUMANS SET TO BE GENETICALLY MODIFIED

Humans will be genetically modified for the first time in Europe after regulators approved trial of DNA-splicing therapy. Scientists say they are using the therapy as a cure for a destructive blood disorder known as beta thalassaemia. The disease reduces the production of haemoglobin which is responsible for carrying oxygen to the cells. Scientists at the biotech company Crispr hope that they can alter the body's code to stop the genetic mutation and restore healthy levels of haemoglobin.
