Dismayed by the divergence of science and religion in the eighteenth century, Emanuel Swedenborg feared the outcome would be scientific materialism and irrational religion, neither of which would fully nourish the human soul. For the first half of his life, Swedenborg devoted his extraordinary mind to science. By midlife, he was engaged in an intensive "search for the soul" in its kingdom – the human body.
Looking for the soul, Swedenborg found his own. The last twenty-seven years of his life were characterized by paranormal experiences that he recorded with the rational accountability of a scientist. This film introduces the viewer to the values he discovered – wonderfully human and profoundly sane. It challenges both religious dogmatism and scientific skepticism. As the leading edges of science and spirituality converge in our own times, Swedenborg is well worth knowing.
