Das Schnellbootlied - German Shanty + English Translation
Speedboats are small warships that are powered by internal combustion engines and can reach high speeds. The development of these boats goes back to the time of the First World War, when Great Britain, Italy and Germany each developed small armed boats.
The Schnellbootflotille (SFltl) was a large association of the German Navy. It was set up in 1957 as the commando of the speed boats and disbanded in 2006. Boats of the SFltl took part in several naval missions abroad.
English Translation:
What is there at the pier?
So lonely and so quiet
Yes, there are the gray* boats from the Seventh S. Flotilla
---
The gray-painted speedboats of the Gepard, Alabtros or Zobel class. The “Seventh S. Flotilla” is the former 7th Schnellbootgeschwader of the German Navy.
Refrain:
On fast, slim boats with thirty-eight knots
we go to sea
It depends on one thing:
We attack in the Viktor* formation
With two times Alle Allez** velocity
And fifty more***, and getting closer
and fifty more, and getting closer
That's already two times fifty more
----
* Viktor = driving speed boats in an arrow-shaped formation (like an upside-down V)
** Command for driving speed. There was a single Allez ride (command "Alle Allez"), the next fastest speed was "Zwomal Alle Allez", followed by Extreme Force (AK). AK was only used in an emergency because it was an enormous load on the engines (had to be entered in the ship's diary of the German Navy). Allez-Fahrt: Driving with the highest possible continuous load speed of the engines. In contrast to AK, the safety circuits are not deactivated.
*** Is related to the increase in the speed of the motor. This increase brings you closer to the enemy ship as the speed of your own ship increases.
"Ready for the maneuver" was the motto
That sounded from the guide boat
"Cast off" was the answer
And we went off at full steam
Good God, what happened
No, it wasn't meant to be that way
Two sailors and a stoker
Fell into the sea
And that happened in the North Sea
Not far from Heligoland
Where many a brave sailor
Found his death in the waves
Verily on the cool seaground
Lulled to sleep by the waves
Go, tell his mother
Where her son is buried
