I always liked this movie, its one of the few ww2 movies where the germans arent shown as evil monsters.
Its not perfect, but for this fact alone it stands out against most of the other movies about ww2 I've ever seen. Its based on this book: The Willing Flesh (German: Das Geduldige Fleisch, 1955) (English translation published 1956) is a novel by Willi Heinrich, chronicling the Eastern Front combat experiences of a depleted infantry platoon during the 1943 German retreat from the Taman Peninsula in the Caucasian coast of Russia.
I've never read this novel, only ever seen the movie. I should probably search for an audiobook version. (Usually the book is even better than the movie in my experience.)
