Al Salam military supermarket in Amman, Jordan, is the region’s first to trial an advanced refrigeration system that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant.

The project is showcasing the feasibility of non-hydrofluorocarbon-based technology in high ambient temperature environments, as part of the global commitment to phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) through the Montreal protocol. It is being implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the support of the Ministry of Environment of Jordan, and is funded by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC).
