Brahms completed two serenades for orchestra between 1858 and 1859. To prepare himself for writing larger symphonies, Brahms decided to complete two works for light orchestra. Brahms was 26 at the time and these works are part of the early collection of his compositions.

This serenade is comprised of five movements:
I. Allegro moderato
II. Scherzo. Vivace
III. Adagio non troppo
IV. Quasi menuetto
V. Rondo. Allegro
