A strong earthquake of considerable duration occurred at 14:37 in Rhodes and the wider area.
According to the Geodynamic Institute's revised solution, the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale and occurred 58 km southeast of Lindos, while the focal depth was located at 22 km.
According to the residents, the earthquake had a long duration and loud noise, while so far there are no reports of damage or injuries.
Very strong earthquake in Rhodes, shook the island: 5.9 Richter and with a long duration
The Euro-Mediterranean Institute also estimates the earthquake at 5.9 Richter.
What do seismologists say?
"The Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory gives a preliminary magnitude of 5.7, but the Euro-Mediterranean Center based in France gives a magnitude of 6 and this is preliminary. In any case, it is a very strong earthquake, but fortunately the epicenter is located in the sea area, approx. 65 kilometers southeast of Lindos, i.e. southeast of the island of Rhodes. I have information that it was strongly felt on the island and probably on other islands of the Dodecanese," said seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos, speaking to ET3, and added that there is the eastern part of the Greek seismic arc, an area very active in the past.
"The wider region has produced even greater magnitudes and consequently, at least for us seismologists , this earthquake today is not a surprise, " he said, stressing that " fortunately, this focus is far from populated areas ."
For his part, the professor of Geology and president of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas appeared reassuring, stressing that although the earthquake was particularly noticeable, and the region has a history of strong vibrations, this does not mean that similar events will be repeated.
"I think the whole process will go well" added Mr. Lekkas speaking to OPEN.
