Bertrand Cantat, the vocalist, was accused of murder and sentenced to eight years in prison by a Lithuanian court for murder committed with indirect intent (dolus eventualis). Cantat has always denied having killed his partner.
These events unfolded over the year following Cantat's speech at the Victoires de la Musique 2002 (French Music Awards) during which he directly, publicly and unexpectedly attacked Vivendi Universal's CEO, Messier, reading an open letter exposing the unethical, corrupt and abusive practices of the company.
Following his incarceration in Lithuania, Cantat served half of his sentence before being released under the condition to never mention the circumstances of Marie Trintignant's death publicly, not a single word, nor to ever allude to these events, in addition to regularly seeing an assigned, not chosen, psychologist. Unbelievable but true.
