'Dissension in the ranks over Ellie Kisyombe is a recipe for disaster for Social Democrats' -Expert (Ireland)
Gary Murphy, the professor of politics at DCU has told RTÉ's Drivetime that the Social Democrats have a bleak future and the history of Irish politics is littered with the corpses of small parties.
The party fell into controversy when it was revealed that Ellie Kisyombe, a rejected asylum seeker who is running as a Social Democrats candidate in North Dublin, hadn't told the truth about her asylum claim to the media.
Mark Tighe for the Sunday Times reported that Kisyombe attempted to claim asylum in the UK in 2011 before being transferred back to Ireland, where she had applied for a student visa. She subsequently requested asylum in Ireland. She had told the media that she had claimed asylum when she had first arrived in Ireland.
Tighe also revealed that in 2014, Kisyombe was arrested and placed in detention in the UK on suspicion of illegal entry. This resulted in a second request by UK authorities to have her removed to Ireland.
She spent 18 months in the UK but told the Irish media she had been in Direct Provision in Ireland the whole time.
