Doki Doki Literature Club Plus - Playthrough Part 3 (True Ending)
Monika talked about various things in the state that the game was currently in - just you and her. The topics ranged from some cheeky 4th wall breaking, talking about the other characters (usually in disparaging ways), giving actual good life advice and sometimes her views on the world. Truth be told I found her quite rational (sometimes even painfully so) and far removed from the monster I expected from all the memes I saw. I even sympathised with her position of being trapped in a game where she has no way of interacting with the protagonist she is programmed to love - that would drive a 2-dimensional AI rather mad. All good things must come to an end though, so I decided to delete her character file to see what would happen. Monika was horrified by this, but also experienced remorse and in an act of complete selflessness and love she restored all the other characters and the world. Starting another playthrough everything seemed overly positive with Sayori being the president of the Literature Club. There was less bickering and even Natsuki was less of a cunt. In a surprise twist Sayori thanked me for deleting Monika showing that she was also self-aware, possibly by occupying the president position. Before she can trap you in a loop Monika interferes and comes to the conclusion that the whole game is fundamentally broken and decides to delete everything giving you one last touching poem at the end. You then have the option to reset the game and play it all over again.
Doki Doki Literature Club is a fantastic title. Even though I normally can't tolerate visual novels due to the lack of gameplay (and the case is the same here) the story is very creative with brilliant writing and interesting twits that kept me interested. The lack of voice-acting may be a minus for those not used to the genre, but I didn't mind it too much since the entire focus of the game is reading and paying attention to words. The art is pretty good and a lot is done with just a few character poses and expressions. There is a good replay value to see how things would progress if you go for a different girl and to unlock more of the gallery (which has great art). The console port did a great job of implementing the game's tricks with the top level operating system. I fully recommend people give this game a try even if they know the twist (like I did) - it's worth experiencing it for yourself. Needless to say, but the best girl is of course Monika.
