Ireland: Some dodgy shenanigans going down at the Mayo University Hospital
Mayo University Hospital called Gardaí to remove a concerned family from the hospital.
The hospital made a sudden decision to remove the patient (who is on a ventilator) from ICU in the Castlebar Hospital to Limerick Hospital. This move came as the family had been raising concerns all week – their loved one was put on a ventilator without their knowledge or consent.
The young woman was classified as “suspected Covid” when she presented with minor breathing difficulties due to a non-serious condition that she has.
She had been conversing with her family and asking questions of hospital staff only hours before she was moved suddenly to ICU.
The family were shocked at this move and urged the Doctor to consult them prior to any decision to put the patient on a ventilator.
The next morning the family discovered – after questioning a nurse – that their loved one had been put on a ventilator. The nurse said she could be on it for weeks.
A ventilator is an invasive “last-resort” procedure. Most patients who are put on a ventilator eventually die.
This family is devastated. We have supported them this week as they have sought information over and over again as to their loved one’s treatment and medication. The hospital has called the Gardaí more than once to remove and escort the family from the premises.
The hospital also advised a family member that they cannot provide an overview of the patient’s treatment. They have directed the family go through the Freedom of Information process – a lengthy and legal procedure that can take months.
We are asking viewers to call both Mayo University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick and raise your concerns over the treatment of this family and their loved one. Why was she put on a ventilator without their knowledge or consent? Why was she suddenly moved from MUH ICU to Limerick against their wishes?
This is only one of many harrowing stories that have emerged in recent days about Mayo University Hospital. What is happening here is a disgrace.
The silence from our politicians – and especially from Sinn Féin, the silent ‘opposition’ – is shameful.
