The Solemn Overture by Wojciech Kilar

The Polish composer Wojciech Kilar completed this short work for orchestra in 2010 at the age of 78. The work was composed to commemorate the 145th anniversary of the town of Katowice being granted the status of city in 1865. Katowice is a city located in southern Poland, but in 1865 was located in the Prussian province of Silesia. Kilar was born in the city of Lwów in 1932, (which in 1932 was part of Poland, but would change to the USSR in 1945 and then Ukraine in 1991). In 1948, the 16-year-old Kilar would move to from Lwów to Katowice and would remain there until 1955. It is in Katowice that Kilar would study music theory and composition.

This work is comprised of a single movement.
