The Briar and The Rose by Tom Waits (Cover)

The theme in this song goes back many centuries, with Barbra Allen, being a good example of a ballad that incorporates the briar and rose symbology.

This particular song was part of a play written in collaboration between Tom Waits, Robert Wilson and William S. Burroughs:

Tom released an album of the songs used in the play under the same name.

The play, about a pact with the devil resulting in the protagonist shooting his wife to be, has a morbid reflection in Burroughs real life.
