Dividing by 5 means that we are making five equal groups, or that we are making groups that each contain 5. We can divide by 5 using different strategies: count up by fives, count back on a number line, use 10 facts then take half the quotient, divide by 10 then double the quotient, or use a multiplication table. We show examples and discuss each one of these different strategies. We finish by solving a multi-step word problem that involves subtraction and division.
