DRAWING BOARD! w. JRRUN - Halloween Special 2020
HALLOWEEN SPECIAL - 'Spooktacular Satchel Special 2020!'
SOFTWARE USED: Photoshop CS5 and Corel Painter 12
This video diary series is about keeping creative and getting artwork done! NB: once again, my trusty webcam, or rather, cable management system - has let me down and there is some webcam freeze... oops!
00:00 - Introduction and preamble: Halloween 2020 - why Horror is so much fun as a genre, using Photoshop CS5 (i.e. PSCS5 or CS5), the possibility of finalising touches in Corel Painter 12, how the video structure will work and allowing imagination to help create the final image
04:40 - Rough blue lines: initial layout, discovering the scenario and letting imagination run wild
07:06 - Roughs continued: foreground, mid-ground (i.e. mids) and backgrounds, wanting to get depth in drawings, leading the eye into a central point, telling a story with poses and visuals and... what helps create a "cool" image
12:21 - Line art begins: using techniques that include brush size variance and Wacom tablet pressure for effect
16:44 - Line art: stopping the video and why?
17:02 - Picking up the pace: from where the last video stopped
17:29 - Line art continues: completing the line art for the final image. Moments throughout this final render include: 19:30 - Where have all the torches gone? Safety with torches, the game called Spotlight and 21:14 - webcam glitch number one.
21:44 - Finishing the line art: getting it completed on time, character poses, perspectives, and proportions
27:14 - Line art completed: next steps - including: laying down a gradient colour scheme to set atmosphere tone and mood
29:40 - Beginning the colouring (coloring) process
29:51 - Layers: how vital they are and how they can improve workflow and frustration
33:33 - Oops! Making mistakes: what went wrong, what to look for and how to avoid common mistakes such as this one
44:32 - Working with shadow and light (using black and white inks and/or colour schemes) to full effect in conjunction with layer properties to produce a depth via subtle enhancements
45:32 - Creating basic effects: using paint and the blurring tools
47:32 - Contrasting colours and colour theory in art: how certain hues are the polar opposites on the colour wheel and yet why using them together can be a really innovative measure
55:43 - Using alternative brushes: SPFX (special effects) brushes and how these can improve your artwork
1:00:40 - Final artwork render finished in Photoshop
1:03:00 - Corel Painter 12: an overview and using the incredible Glow tool!
1:11:00 - Signing off and well-wishes
Happy Halloween, everybody!
