This refers to a geological term in which layers of different kinds of rock or minerals are superimposed upon each other but each layer shifts over time due to the gradual movement of sedimentary rocks or tectonic plates. The piece sounds slightly reminiscent of minimalism but this is purely accidental. It forms a link with 2 other works that feature melodic layers superimposed over an ostinato – Counterpoint 1 and Counterpoint 2 (both available on this site) although this work is superior to either of them.
