Beethoven completed this quartet in 1800 at the age of 30, dedicating the work to his frequent patron Joseph Franz von Lobkowitz. It is noted that Beethoven modelled this quartet on the quartet in the same key by Mozart, K. 464.

This quartet in comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro
II. Menuetto
III. Andante cantabile
IV. Allegro
