Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Clair de Lune (from Suite bergamasque)
Johannes Brahms
Born: May 7, 1833 Hamburg, Germany
Died: April 3, 1897 Vienna, Germany
Andante from the Piano Quartet in c minor, op. 60
Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Allegro Vivace from
Violincello and Piano Sonata #3 in A Major, op.69
From the Romantic exuberance that left nothing unsaid,
Debussy sought refuge in an art of indirection,
subtle and discreet.
One of the important piano composers, he created
a distinctive new style of writing for the instrument.
Clair de Lune was the most popular piece he ever wrote.
Beethoven created the music of a heroic age, and
in accents never to be forgotten proclaimed its
faith in the power of man to shape his destiny.
Once, in a rage, Beethoven wrote, "Prince! What
you are, you are through the accident of birth.
What I am, I am through my own efforts. There have
been many princes, and there will be thousands
more. But there is only one Beethoven!"
Brahms first important chamber music works came
comparatively early in his career. He wrote the
Piano Quartet in c minor at age 31. In greater degree
than any of his contemporaries Brahms captured the
tone of intimate communion that is the essence of
chamber music style.
Brahms' aim was to show that new and important
things could still be said in the tradition of the
Classical masters. His four symphonies are
unsurpassed in the late Romantic period for
breadth of conception and design.
