A sniper should be for observational purposes. Imagine you see a guy with a rifle and take him out because you saw his as a treat and then you learn he was leading or part of a group to defend a group of marauders coming to the area. You just weakened your own defenses and now become a threat in their eyes as with that marauder group. Now you expect an immediate retaliation from the relatives of the guy you mistakenly took out.
If you take out a potential treat others with that treat as well as people in the area will now consider you a treat and may target you. People thing they can hide behind a scope and they are safe but that is far from reality. All eyes will be in the direction the shot came from, spray and pray rounds hitting all around you, possible counter snipers looking for you down a lens or you being pinned down with suppressive fire and a group coming at using cover and dogs. You shoot the dog, your discovered and shot, you don’t shoot the dog and it tears you apart or gives away your position when you knife him.
The best way to win a fight is not to be in one. Unless a few scenarios where you can take out a marauder leader. Then unless they are organized they will scatter or start fighting amongst themselves over who is the new leader.
There are a few ways to go when choosing a rifle. But remember if you are in a urban area don’t expect shots more than 300 yards.
A good bolt action will be the more accurate option but the slow rate of fire and limited capacity may not work well if need to actually need to take that shot..
