Tchaikovsky completed this work for cello and orchestra in 1877, with the premiere performance being given in November the same year. Tchaikovsky was attempting to compose a work based on a theme in Rococo style, however the theme was an original composition of Tchaikovsky.

The work is comprised of the initial theme and eight variations:

Thema: Moderato semplice
I. Tempo della Thema
II. Tempo della Thema
III. Andante
IV. Allegro vivo
V. Andante grazioso
VI. Andante
VII. Andante sostenuto
VIII. Allegro moderato con anima
