Schubert completed this quartet for strings in 1812 while under the tutelage of fellow composer Antonio Salieri. The work was not published in its entirety until the first half of the 19th century due to the original score being scattered between a number of owners.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Presto
II. Andante
III. Menuetto
IV. Allegro con spirito
