CBD (cannabinoid) oil
Cannabis is an area of growing interest in the treatment of specific conditions. Importantly only specific conditions. The best studied of which is children’s epilepsy. There is evidence that it can help in reducing the frequency and severity of seizures.
CBD oil is a related product that has found use and registration for the same conditions. It is made from several formulations derived from either cannabis or hemp. One option is an only CBD solution that has no psychoactive component that will cause euphoria and relaxation.
Others use a mixture of CBD and THC. THC is one of the active components in cannabis. This causes the narcotic effect. Both possible formulations are used in both prescription and over the counter products.
The different formulations lead to very different products which can have extremely different effects. This is reflected in the available literature which does not appear to show a large body of evidence to support the use for many conditions.
When it comes to epilepsy there is some evidence that CBD is an effective treatment. Like cannabis it can reduce the severity and frequency of seizures.
There are a few limited examples of it working for a lot of different conditions but these are based on poor quality or limited studies. This is the important point. CBD use for others conditions is based on poor research that may yet be elucidated or not.
