St George's Day and Ramadan

April 23rd was St George's Day. St George is the patron saint of England, a mythical figure in antiquity who slayed an evil dragon who demanded human sacrifice. It is also the date of Shakespeare's birth and death. English people should be able to celebrate our national day openly and enthusiastically, and to have our rights and long history respected, like any other national or ethnic group of people.
This year, the evening of April 23rd was also the beginning of the Muslim month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast during the day and feast at night. While there are many good people who are Muslims, including a wonderful family I once was privileged to know many years ago, we have every right, and indeed the need for everyone's sake, to name those particular parts of Islamic ideology which command the abuse or murder of non-Muslims for the evil they truly are. I first learned about the darker side of Islamic ideology and something of the bloody history of kafirs under Muslim rule in India and Pakistan from a book someone sent me eighteen years ago after a letter of mine was published in the Times, entitled "The Koran and the Kafir" by A. Ghosh, with the subtitle "All that an infidel needs to know about the Koran but is embarrassed to ask".
