Tesla Factory Europe Coming Up! Can German Carmakers Hold Up?
Elon Musk hinted on Tesla's recent earnings call that a fully operational Tesla Factory Europe is planned for 2021. On the other hand, major German carmakers like BMW, Mercedes, and VW all have at least one full-electric car model to be launched by the same year 2021. Last but not least, the progress of the Chinese Tesla Gigafactory and the best features in the upcoming Tesla V10 update can't be missing in this week's EV news episode ;)
-------------------- TESLA NEWS: --------------------
The outside of Elon Musk Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai looks completely finished, and on the inside various assembly lines for Model 3 are being equipped with Tesla factory robots as well. The new Gigafactory 3 will certainly boost Tesla model 3 sales China even more.
We can expect a Tesla factory expansion to Europe by 2021, and the most favored location for a Tesla Gigafactory Europe at the moment is the French-German border area.
Based on Tesla Q2 delivery report, Tesla has tripled their car sales in Europe in the first half of 2019, compared to the same time period in 2018 despite a slowing car market. The Model 3 is currently by far the best selling EV in Europe, hence a Tesla factory in Europe is indeed overdue.
Being able to watch YouTube and Netflix on Tesla screen are certainly the coolest feature in the upcoming Tesla updates. Other promising upcoming Tesla features include Smart Summon and improved autopilot behavior.
-------------------- UPCOMING GERMAN EVS: --------------------
Spy shots of the Mercedes EQS, a large Sedan in their all-electric EQ car series, indicate an elegant design and a comparable finish to the Tesla Model S. The remaining key question is of course whether the range of the Mercedes EQS could compete with that of the Tesla Model S.
Leaked shots of the upcoming full-electric VW ID.3 reveal a modern and futuristic design both on the outside and for the interior. Moreover, VW is busy testing the SUV version of the ID.3, the VW ID. Crozz, which could be seen with production body for the first time.
Spy shots of the upcoming full-electric BMW Vision iNEXT indicate that the design of the production version will be a lot more boring and less futuristic than the concept car.
We're quite excited about Elon's announcement of a new Gigafactory in Europe, and with a high probability even in Germany, the country where we live! And hopefully this will force the legacy German car manufactures to launch more electric car models more quickly. We'd be really happy to test some German electric cars with a range comparable to Tesla vehicles. But we somehow doubt it 🙃
