The Merchant of Venice (1973 TV Movie)

The Merchant of Venice is a 1973 TV adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic play, starring Sir Laurence Olivier and Dame Joan Plowright. This is a co-production of Associated Television (ATV) and National Theatre. Directed for the stage by Jonathan Miller and for the Screen by John Sichel.

The setting in this production looks like late Victorian era (or Edwardian?). There are some scenes which give the clues of the canals of Venice, but everything else in the play points to Victorian England. But there is a great ensemble acting and Laurence Olivier is outstanding as Shylock.
