Origins Matter
Man naturally seeks his origins. Even nature around us does the same. The water evaporated into the sky reaches a point where it must come back down to earth in rain, sleet or snow. The pacific salmon fish puts this on display like no other: after living in the salt water of the open ocean, this amazing fish longs to return home to the clear and fresh waters of some mountain stream… making its return an all or nothing affair, overcoming obstacles as high as 10 feet, and swimming up to 1000 miles… discerning exactly the smell of their home waters. They must find and know their origins before they can bring forth new life and die. Adopted children are similarly driven to find and meet their parents as if a part of their life were missing. In a way most of the Holy Bible is about origins. The Gospels begin with St. Matthew’s genealogy tracing the origins of His Majesty through David back to Abraham, our father in faith. St. Luke traces His Majesty’s human nature back to Adam and then God Himself: “Who was of Adam, who was of God” (3:38). In other words, Christ Jesus is the source of man’s salvation, no matter when and where man lives. He is our Origin or Exemplar. As Ven. Mother Mary of Agreda says, Jesus and Mary are the Great Originals in view of whom Adam and Eve were created. When we do find our origins, once again it is part of our nature to honor, to respect and give thanks to them… to venerate them accordingly. I bring this to your attention today because I want you to notice something that has been happening more and more in our times…namely there has been much dishonoring and disrespecting our origins… our parents, our ancestors, our priests and our bishops and popes, even, sad to say, Our Holy Mother the Church. And as Halloween shows, there is much loving of death all around us. And it is happening on a broader and broader scale, and more boldly too! How is it that so many people are able to act contrary to their nature? For more please visit http://www.re..
