The item seems to be under intelligent control at the very least. But if it is an actual creature of some type it kind of reminds me of the Star Trek Next Generation episode called Conspiracy. Where these alien parasites slowly infiltrate and took over all the senior officials of the federation. But they had the ability to act normal. Meanwhile the parasite was attached at the back of the neck into the brain.
