In this present generation with the postmodern/emergent movement and mystery/spirit of lawlessness at work to soon reveal that man of sin.. That spirit is now clutching at the foundations (Heb. 6:1-3) and attempting to not only tell us that .. we will not die, we will become like God, we will have God's knowledge, etc. but that there is no everlasting punishment where the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched. Like all sound doctrine in scripture we must read the scriptures in full context and let the plain texts inform the obscure. We must not allow our emotional bias to inform the text but be persuaded by the Holy Spirit of the truth the LORD has revealed.. even if it offends our sensibilities. Let God be true and every man a liar... - Rom. 3:4

DISCLAIMER: Both speakers here hold to the PSA - Penal Substitutionary Atonement theory of Anselm / Calvin which brought some faulty questions and arguments in the cross-examinations portion. We refute this view of the atonement. Penal substitutionary atonement (the dominant and prevailing view of today -- from reform / Anselmian and Calvinistic theology) is not the teaching of scripture. Christ came to deliver us from captivity to sin, death, and the devil by means of His blood atonement. In this, He (the Son of God) and God is at once both the reconciler and the reconciled and deals with the threefold problem entailed in the fall by providing us with Liberty from the Law of Sin/Death/Devil, Amnesty - justly and truly granting pardon or forgiveness from sin/condemnation, and Washing us to Walk in Holiness -grafting us into eternal life if we so abide in Him .. that is freeing us from corruption. This is the classic/dramatic and biblical complete teaching on the atonement. It is not of penalty paid in Christ, but of pardon and forgiveness. Think about it... If Christ paid it, how have we been truly forgiven of anything. The entire notion is self-refuting. Be Bereans and TEST EVERYTHING, hold fast what is true. Grace and peace multiplied to you in the name of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

A Critical Biblical Review:
Chris Date does not read Irenaeus in context. Irenaeus most definitely DID NOT hold his position. Irenaeus speaks of an intermediate state or conscious existence apart from the body (not soul sleep or physicalism) and the everlasting misery of the wicked in eternal fire. (not anihilationism, being deprived of life or extinction). Chris Date plays word games with cessation of existence because for him the rotting corpse remains. The later church fathers (so-called, they did not refer to themselves as such) are admitedly a mixed lot since the pure stream was being polluted especially as the church merged with the world & empire. Irenaeus, however was a disciple of Polycarp who was a disciple of John the Apostle which is closer to the source in terms of their understanding and guarding of the holy scriptures and sound doctrine.
