#WhereWeWeed @DC420LA Green Earth Collective Highland Park, Los Angeles
The green cross is gone, now that they have their adult-use permits, but with a corner shop on bustling York, green windows and a sign emblazoned with the recognizable cannabis leaf, they are inviting us all to enjoy our newly established right to recreate in California. Green Earth Collective embraces their identity.
Established in 2007, Green Earth Collective is one of Los Angeles’ oldest medical cannabis dispensaries conveniently, located in the heart of Highland Park at 4801 York Blvd. As of last week, GEC received their recreational license, proudly displayed outside the entry, and is now serving all cannabis consumers twenty-one and over with a government issued ID.
Dispensaries are not convenience stores. I’d venture to say, they are inconvenient stores. Forget the plants being tracked and traced, which isn’t actually happening in California currently, the customers are tracked and traced. You don’t just show your ID like you do for that nightly eighteen pack, bottle of Jack and carton of Camels. You get put in the system, sign an agreement and wait to get buzzed into the shop from the lobby, complete with armed security guard and cameras everywhere. Don’t touch your phone, and whatever you do don’t touch the jar!
That’s right, gone are the days of opening that big glass jar full of beautiful buds and getting a blast of terpenes and trichomes. It was part of the experience. Now It feels more like Rob Reiner in Spinal Tap, “Don’t touch it, don’t touch it, don’t even look at it.” Forget smelling the single bud impaled bud inside a glass jar, lit by a small ring of LED lights with a magnifying glass on top and a crack to let out some terps. Oh well, I can buy a pack of joints now, so that’s cool.
All that being said, dispensary staff are well aware of the inconvenience in this new market of vice consumer, and they are usually the friendliest people you’ll do business with all week. Green Earth Collective is no exception. From the super friendly guard in the too loose body armor, (just a tip) and Zilla behind the glass getting you in the system, to Skylar and Eric behind the counters, all were excited to be serving new customers in this strange world of regulated legal cannabis.
The small dispensary is stocked with an ample selection of flower, including some proprietary strains, as well as all your favorites like Green Crack, Girl Scout, GG 4. But this is the first dispensary we’ve been to, since recreational has blossomed, that has had a deal. Blue Dream smalls, $20 eighths OTD. Hello, we don’t mind small nugs. We were so excited about that, we forgot to actually buy it! We were engaged in some great conversation with Sky, who was very knowledgeable and friendly, but we missed our Blue Dream.
We try to keep our hauls to a hundred bucks and that ain’t easy in the adult-use market in Los Angeles. We have a total of 35% in taxes, if you don’t have a state issued medical card which would save you %15 as a patient. Woo hoo! We like to do a sampler or a bouquet of flowers and went with two private strains, GEC Haze - S, White Recluse-I, both at $15g. And Dream Queen-S, which was at a nice per gram price of $8. Despite all the news about Oregon and generally a drop in wholesale cannabis prices, we are not seeing lower retail prices in the budding recreational market, at least in LSA. Certainly not Oregon prices, where they are basically giving away weed for dollars a gram.
We’re not big users of concentrates, vape pens notwithstanding, which GEC carries, along with some shatters, waxes, RSO, Terpsauce and limited tinctures. And they do have a very nice selection of old school bubble hash. We picked up a gram of Skywalker and started topping off our bowls as soon as we got home. Ah, memories, that awesome hash high. We’ll be back for more of that.
Their edible section is somewhat limited, but there’s a little something for everyone. You’ve got your Kiva chocolate, your Korova cookies and they carry one of our favorites, Breez mints in the handy 50 mints/ 5mg, 250mgs total for that perfect microdose and a good deal at $35.
Our hundred dollar haul ended up at $93 pre-tax and $127 OTD:
WHITE RECLUSE 1G, GEC HAZE 1G $15, DREAM QUEEN 1G $8, SKYWALKER HASH 1G $20, BREEZ MINTS 250MG $35
SALES TAX $11, CITY OF LA TAX $10, EXCISE TAX $12
GEC is one of the most geographically desirable dispensaries to our home, so we’ll be back when we visit the vegan food trucks and doughnuts on York to check out their deals and private strains. Thanks to Sky, Eric, Zilla and the whole team over at GEC for your kind customer service and knowledge. I’d like to hear more about the terpene profiles, particularly of your private strains, and your website unfortunately doesn’t elaborate.
